Charter school performance in Maryland

Black and Hispanic students achieve more in charter schools that in traditional public schools

  1. On average, Maryland charter school students experienced stronger learning gains in both reading and math compared to traditional public school students.
  2. A study over four school years, ending in 2016-17, revealed that urban charter students did better in reading and similarly in math compared to regular public schools. Suburban charter students did about the same in both subjects as traditional public school students.
  3. The strongest gains were seen in Black and Hispanic students who attended urban charter schools.
