Charter School Performance in Ohio

Charter school performance rated before and after HB 2 legislation

  1. Typical charter school students in Ohio made similar progress in reading and weaker growth in math compared to their traditional public school peers in the four school years ending in 2016- 17. Results varied widely among different types and education levels. Overall, charter school gains were dragged down by poor online charter school results.
  2. Greater academic progress was seen for Black students in charter schools, including Black students in poverty, for reading.
  3. Margaret Raymond, director of CREDO at Stanford University, said, “The performance in Ohio charter schools has been consistent since our initial investigation in 2009. We intend to continue to study the impact of the bipartisan legislation HB 2 and other policies.”
